Information: Salco Partners have one of the largest pedigree Salers herds in Australia, with 120 registered breeding females. Our herd is based on top Australian, French and New Zealand bloodlines. This year we will have the majority of our animals on display. We use Salers Breedplan, with additional selection for temperament, polling, fertility, and maternal traits. Salers are renowned for exceptional ease of calving and maternal traits, resulting in strong demand for breeding females. Crossbred Salers X British breeds produces calves with high capacity for weight gain that are keenly sought by feedlotters.

STOCK AND LAND BEEF FIELD WEEK                                  Saturday, January 28th, 2017

STUD 260    http://www.salcopartners.com.au/

Welcome to Salco Salers stud. We will have 120 purebred Salers breeders, split into spring and autumn calvers on display. All animals are recorded on breedplan. Our 40 autumn calvers start calving in early-February and our 80 spring calvers and replacement heifers have 5 month calves at foot and will be pregnancy tested in the next 2 weeks.

Moving round from the stockyards to our shed and then back to the house, we will have 184 cattle on display. These are:

  1. In the small paddock on the left as you enter the property, before the stockyards:  Five 18 month old Salers Bulls. More details on these animals are listed below.
  2. In the stockyards:  Eleven August-September 2015 drop Salers replacement heifers that have been with the bull to calve August 2017.
  3. In the stockyards:  Nine yearling bulls. Six of these are AI to NewZealand sires. More details on these animals are listed below.
  4. In the lane past the stockyard:  11 spring calving cows with 4-6 month old purebred salers bull calves at foot.
  5. In the lane between the paddocks:  26 spring calving cows with 4-6 month old purebred salers heifer calves at foot.
  6. In front of the shed:  13 yearling replacement heifers

Salers bulls for sale

While we and many others have had a tough few months with no rain and no grass, resulting in handfeeding of very expensive hay, the silver lining is the exceptional prices that cattle are fetching. Most breeders know that the increase in prices is long overdue, and it has certainly put a spring in the step of the cattle business, despite the poor season in large parts of the country. We are seeing a significant increase in buyer interest, as breeders look to invest in new genetics to maximise returns. This weekend we hosted buyers looking for (and buying!) bulls, cows and heifers to improve their breeding programs. Repeat bull buyers understand the additional value that hybrid vigour can add, especially with Salers crossed over British breed animals.

Buyers inspecting bulls for sale at Salco Partners property

Salers are reknown for their calving ease and maternal attributes. From our experience, this message has reached the market place, resulting in a strong demand for Salers heifers and cows. Over the past 5 years we have been able to sell every female Salers breeder that we were able to release, typically 30+ females a year. A live calf on the ground every year from each breeding female is the single most important factor in making a profit. Salers cows know how to make a profit!

Hereford X Salers calves do well

Following up from a post on this website back in February, Glenn Riseley recently sent us some more photos of his first crop of Hereford X Salers calves.

“Here’s some more pics of the calves. We have had a good season so far, it’s starting to dry off now. Calves will be weaned in a couple of weeks. They’re growing well. Glenn Riseley”
