We have hade 2 very good seasons in West Gippsland resulting in some great results from our Salers cattle. We pregnancy tested 80 breeders (cows and heifers) from our Autumn calving herd at the end of August with 75 returning in calf. This has been followed by our Spring Calving herd producing 65 live calves from 68 animals that were tested pregnant back in February (2 animals lost twins, and 1 hasn’t calved). We normally run 40-50 breeders in each herd, which means we have some outstanding Salers cows & calves, PTIC heifers and 14 month heifers for sale. The stock are in excellent condition (see photos below), quiet, nearly all polled and all registered animals. All reasonable offers considered. For more information phone Peter on 0408330198.
This video shows a quick look round our bull paddock in February 2024. Most of the bulls in the video are 2022 drop (18-24 months old), with 3 from the 2021 drop. We currently have 8 homozygous polled bulls (based on PCR testing of tail hairs), 3 heterozygous polled, and 2 horned. The 2 horned bulls (RLWPS054 & RLWPS062) are from AI using imported French semen from the bull Baron. We also have a heterozygous polled bull (RLWPT071) from the French sire Beguin. We use Breedplan recording to continually improve growth and maternal milk values. Finally, as the video shows, the bulls we have for sale are extremely docile and are being used by an increasing number of people for crossbreeding with breeds such as Hereford, Angus, Charolais and Brahman. Please ring (0408330198) or email (peter@salcopartners.com.au) for more details.
The link below is to a 5 minute video shown at the Australian Salers AGM on December 9th, 2023. It gives a quick tour of our Salers stud with some additional information on how we are using BreedPlan to improve EBV for milk and weaning weights, as well as our progress towards homozygous polling throughout our herd of 120 breeders. Enjoy!
The link below is to a 4 minute video of cows, calves and bulls that we have on our property at the moment. We have had an excellent season with plenty of spring rain after a relatively dry winter. As can be seen, the grass is green and the cattle are fat! We hope you enjoy the video (all filmed by Peter with an iPhone, so what you see is what you get!)
This is our first attempt at producing a video. All done with an iPhone 6S, so not very high tech.
We start with a greeting, followed by some footage showing the flooding we have had this winter, which was our wettest in 30 years.
After that, some views of our Salers cattle in early Spring (Australian time: September – October 2020) while it was still very wet.
Enjoy
Today our Vet Dave Morris from Bass Valley Embryo Services pregnancy tested 90 Salers in our Spring calving group. 84 tested pregnant for a 93% pregnancy rate. One 14 year old cow was empty, although another 17 year old cow was pregnant with what will be her 15th calf. Salers are exceptionally fertile and long lived. 3 of the other empty animals were 16 month old heifers who were the youngest animals to go with the bull. 61 out of 63 cows with calves at foot are back in calf, including 15 to AI bulls; a great outcome.

As well as preg testing our Spring calving herd, we are in the middle of calving our Autumn calving herd. We labelled 10 new calves this weekend and after 2 weeks of calving have 22 out of 50 calves on the ground.

Saturday 1st of February was Day 4 of Beef Week. A brief description and photo from Salco Salers Stud is on the Stock and Land website at:
In addition to 27mm rain at the weekend, we also had the first 2 calves for 2020. Both born with the minimum of fuss and up and feeding within minutes.
