Successful Spring Calving and Cattle Breeding Insights

After a dry and relatively warm winter, favourable Spring conditions have resulted in excellent grass production. Our spring calvers finished calving 3 weeks ago with 55 live calves from 56 pregnant dams. So far we have 29 homozygous polled calves with only 4 horned and test results still to be received for the last 8 calves that were born.

We have 84 cows and heifers to go with bulls at the start of November. As part of our program to breed polled Salers, we preferentially retain homozygous polled heifers and only use homozygous polled bulls unless we are in the process of producing polled progeny from imported French AI sires.

We recently weaned our Autumn calvers to take advantage of the current favourable prices for cattle. We retained our top 8 bull and 20 heifer calves for our own breeding program and private sales. We currently have bulls, cows and calve and heifers of varying ages for sale.

We have 55 cows and heifers to start calving in February, including some interesting new genetics from top French AI sires Icare, Lorenzo, Pylone and Haltere. The latter 2 of these bulls are some of the first heterozygous polled Salers bulls with AI semen available from the French Salers Association.

On Saturday November 14th from 11am to 3pm we will have an on farm open day as part of the annual Australian Salers Association AGM weekend. https://www.salersaustralia.com.au/australian-salers-association-farm-visits-and-agm-weekend-14-15th-november-2026/

Visitors who are interested in the Salers breed but who are not ASA memners are welcome to visit during this time. A selection of Salers cattle will be available for viewing.
